Bugs
Question: How do I get rid of sow bugs - they are under every scrap of woody material and in roots!
Answer: Sowbugs commonly are found under piles of wood, rocks and among decaying vegetation. They like dark and moist areas. They don't do a lot of damage to plants unless there are very large numbers of them. A product called diatamaceous earth, marketed under various names, is very effective against them. Dust the material amongst them, and it has the effect of crawling over broken glass, not pleasant but non-toxic to humans. Alternatives include diazinon or sevin. Reducing the places where they feel comfortable is another possibility, removing the wood if possible.
Question: I have a covered deck and I find alot of flies fly around in the centre of it and they are annoying, especially since we like to entertain there. Are there any outdoor plants that I could plant in a container on the deck that would ward off flies?
Answer: There are no plants we are aware of that ward off flies. Some plants are attractants, such as the Venus Fly Trap, but the number of flies controlled would be small. The use of fly strips or fly traps is recommended.
Question: Could you please tell me what to do about tiny caterpillars eating the leaves of morning glory?
Answer: You can control caterpillars by using BTK, a biologic concentrate that is sprayed onto leaf surfaces. The caterpillars must eat some of the treated leaves to ingest the control product.
Question: What can be done about maple bugs? Can I spray them?
Answer: Maple bugs or Box Elder bugs frequent Maples, Cedars, Box Elders and other various plants. They are more of a nuisance than a serious problem, and can be brought under control with "SEVIN" liquid concentrate which would be sprayed on the tree.
