LAWN CARE IN THE OKANAGAN

One of the most effective ways to keep your lawn healthy and pest-free is to apply a very thin layer of quality soil once or twice per season. These light applications add nutrients to the soil and increase its water-holding capacity - a must in the dry Okanagan! Art Knapp Plantland offers several bulk soil mixes for top-dressing your lawn and the expert staff to help you choose.

Although it is tempting to water your lawn every day for a short period of time (10-15 minutes is common), the plants ultimately suffer and are weakened by this practice. The water never sinks deep into the soil and the roots remain close to the soil surface.

Shallow roots are deadly in Okanagan heat. The grass dries out quickly and the accompanying stress opens the lawn to pest attacks of all sorts. With this in mind, water your lawn deeply, but infrequently (up to twice per week for a long period).

Come in and talk to our lawn-care specialists for more information!

We offer a wide range of fertilizers and pesticides to aid you in your lawn-care activities. We are happy to help answer any questions you might have, just drop in at one of our Art Knapp locations.

Tip: Deep roots are essential to a healthy lawn. A rule of thumb is that the height of your grass approximately equals the depth of its roots. Higher-cut grass is more tolerant of stress, especially during the heat of summer. Mowing too short (less than 2 in. or 5 cm) interrupts the plant's ability to produce the food it needs to grow strong, deep roots.
